Lost In Lexicon By Pendred Noyce

A Review By Andrea R. Garrison - Online With Andrea

Lost In Lexicon: An Adventure in Words and Numbers by Pendred Noyce is a wonderful chapter book. While the target age is 9-12 I think that this is an enjoyable read for anyone. It is intelligent, mysterious and fun. It challenges the mind to think and then there is the spirit of adventure that adds a spark to anyone who enjoys the excitment of exploring new places and new things. What I like about it is that it assumes that the reader is intelligent. It inspires us to ask questions, to explore possibilities and to find the answers. It has all of the elements that make curling up and reading a book a very special experience. Lost in Lexicon speaks to the mind with intelligence and speaks to the heart with delight. The illustrations by Joan Charles add color and life to the interesting characters in this adventure in words and numbers. Lost in Lexicon would be a wonderful film or a perfect story for a television series. The Cynical Idealist - A Spiritual Biography Of John Lennon

A Review by Andrea R. Garrison - Online With Andrea

The Cynical Idealist by Gary Tillery is a thoughtful book on John Lennon. What is so brilliant about this book is that Gary decided to take on a different perspective by focusing on the spiritual side of John Lennon who was and still is a mega star that is much larger than life. I started reading this book very early one Monday morning and I did not move until I finished the book. The Cynical Idealist is just that compelling. It is a page turner indeed. This book does not exploit John Lennon. If any thing it is a warm tribute to a man who knew that all we need is love and pleaded that we give peace a chance. It is rather ironic that one who lived for love and peace would die at the hands of violence. It not only gives you a great biographical picture of John Lennon but it also provides a glimpse into the history and the often turbulent times when he lived on this earth. If you are a John Lennon fan you will love this book because it shares another dimension of his personality that is often overlooked or misunderstood. If you are not a John Lennon fan after reading this book you may become one. For more information on Gary Tillery visit www.garytillery.com and listen to the Online With Andrea interview with Gary.

The Adventures of Buddhist Boy

Talk Thai – The Adventures of Buddhist Boy

A Review By Andrea R. Garrison - Online With Andrea

If you have ever wondered what it is like to grow up in a Thai household while living in America Talk Thai – The Adventures of Buddhist Boy by Ira Sukrungruang is the book to read. What is so great about this book is that it truly tackles some challenging issues with warmth and humor. I found myself reading the book and laughing hysterically at times. In the midst of this enjoyable read I gained valuable insights into what it is like to grow up deeply in the midst of two different cultures. Ira candidly shares his adventures growing up. There are so many questions raised. What does happen when your culture at home is distinctly different from the culture outside of your home? What it is like being so different from all of your friends and neighbors? How does one assimilate in one culture with out losing their roots? While often times we focus on the differences it is interesting to note how similar we all are. Reading Talk Thai is a wonderful reminder of how important it is to learn about different cultures which will lead to a greater understanding of all.
